Price Reform and Household Demand for Electricity
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper estimates a model of residential electricity demand to project the impact of proposed tariff changes on a representative sample of 130 Barbadian households. The results from the demand function suggest that the price elasticities of demand for particular appliances varied significantly, with households that utilize solar water heating being more price elastic than households that use air conditioning and electric water heating . The income effects were, however, statistically insignificant as they may have been captured by choices of appliances rather than utilisation. The income elasticity for households with solar water heating was found to be negative, probably reflecting the substitution impact arising from the use of solar power to provide water heating. The database also allowed the authors to breakdown price and income elasticities by individual households and these results suggest that middle-income households tend to be more prices sensitive, indicating that these households may be more able to reduce their usage of discretionary appliances than low-income households. The propose changes in the electricity rate structure was investigated and determined to likely have very little influence on households demand for electricity. Changes in consumption will however be more noticeable within upper consumption and upper income households. JEL Classification: Q41; C24; O54

Household electricity demand estimation: a regression discontinuity design approach
Estimating electricity demand elasticity in different sectors has been an essential research topic. Considering the fact that pricing electricity in various countries does not follow the same rules, many econometrics methods have been developed to estimate this crucial parameter. Electricity demand elasticity is defined as the percent change in electricity consumption in response to one percent...
متن کاملThe Effect of Raising Electricity Price on Welfare of the Household Sector in Rural Areas of Guilan Province, Iran
Present study investigates the effect of soaring residential electricity price on the welfare of rural individuals in Guilan Province by Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) in which the elasticity’s and welfare variations were calculated by Compensation Variations (CV) and Equivalent Variations (EV) for the time period of 1991-2012. It was shown that the absolute value of income and price elastic...

Electricity consumption has been rising with an average annual growth of 7% in Iran and the imbalance in production and consumption has caused power outage crisis and economic losses. More than 50% of peak electricity demand is related to the household sector, so the household sector can be considered as the most effective component of the electricity crisis. Investment costs for the constructi...

Reducing or eliminating subsidies for the electricity sector in the economy is a good way to control the daily consumption of electricity and balance the cost of supply and demand players. By increasing or decreasing electricity subsidies, indirect taxes are reduced or increased. Under these conditions, assuming the stability of primary inputs and the stability of power generation technology an...
